SAPCA Awarded Certificate for Work on Underage Drinking LawsThe Arlington Ready Coalition presented SAPCA with a certificate of appreciation, on behalf of the Community Coalitions of Virginia, to recognize SAPCA's achievements toward improving underage drinking laws in the state of Virginia. Based on SAPCA's recommendations, Delegate Charniele Herring sponsored a bill, strengthening the language in the Code of Virginia relating to providing alcohol to minors. The new wording made the "Social Host" law more enforceable in Virginia. It holds adults accountable for willfully contributing to the provision of alcohol to all underage consumers.
Shelly Morgan offers “A Partner’s Perspective” on the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s strategy site. She explains why and how she became involved in coalition work. Click here to hear Shelly’s story.
Sticker Shock volunteers kick off the campaign with support from Mayor William D. Euille. |
On October 22, teams of youth and adults from the City of Alexandria “shocked” purchasers of alcohol by placing bright red warning stickers on multi-packs of beer, wine coolers and other alcohol products in Alexandria stores. The stickers contain warnings about the serious penalties for furnishing alcohol to minors. In Virginia, providing alcohol to a minor is a Class 1 misdemeanor, with a punishment of up to $2,500 and up to 12 months in jail, or both. In addition, to these penalties, a person found guilty of this offense shall have his or her license to operate a motor vehicle suspended for a period of not more than one year.
