About the Initiative

ACOAN logo“All Alexandrians, including employers, need to be concerned about the childhood obesity epidemic in our community. Childhood obesity increases health care utilization and costs for employers. As overweight children miss more days of school than other children, their working parents have to take more time off of work. A great way to fight or prevent childhood obesity and encourage healthy lifestyles is to get the whole family on a healthier track. I’m happy that ACOAN has established this award to recognize those employers who are helping make Alexandria a healthier place.”

 - Alexandria City Mayor William D. Euille (small businessman)

The Alexandria Healthy Workplace Awards Program is an initiative of the Alexandria Childhood Obesity Action Network (A-COAN).

· The awards program will encourage healthy competition between workplaces and will recognize those businesses that succeed in identifying and addressing habits that trigger obesity. This website features a checklist of healthy workplace habits and other information on steps employers can take. The criteria is simple and open ended. Lifestyle issues such as nutrition, physical activity, and breastfeeding support in a business environment will be evaluated.

· All employers that do business in the city of Alexandria will be eligible to apply for an award. Applications are due by September 15, 2013.

“Statistics have shown a healthy workplace impacts the bottom line in addition to the waistline. If our employees can take this healthy attitude home to their families, all the better.”

- Jim Scott, CEO of Applied Policy and an Alexandria employer eager to participate
