SAPCA has over 100 members and community partners. Our work would truly not be possible without all of their leadership, support, and participation. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and this month we want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of our volunteers and partners for ALL that they do. In recognition of Volunteer Appreciation Month, we would like to highlight the work of our Kick Butts Day Volunteers. These 35 Alexandria youth, supported by adults, conducted Operation Storefront, where they filled out surveys on the amount of tobacco advertising in over 60 local stores for Kick Butts Day.

SAPCA partnered with local law enforcement for the sixth annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They collected 196 pounds of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. Over 5000 collections sites nationwide participated in the fourth take back day program this past Saturday and over 3,150 pounds were collected in the Northern Virginia area alone. In Alexandria, residents dropped off unused prescription medications at the Police Headquarters and the parking lot of the Del Ray Pharmacy. The service was free and anonymous.
Last fall, the two Alexandria law enforcement agencies collected 165 pounds of prescription drugs for destruction in the fifth take back initiative.
SAPCA joined the Coalition for Clean and Smoke Free Air, Y Street, and the Alexandria Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Activities for a Kick Butt's Day Kick Off on Wednesday, March 20 in front of T.C. Williams. SAPCA Club President, Emma West; SAPCA Club Member, Cassie Cowart and Mayor Euille kicked off the event. Then, over 40 youth, supervised by adults, visited over 60 stores and conducted Operation Storefront surveys where they recorded information about tobacco and alcohol advertising. Check out the story in the Old Town Patch!

There is a great new resource to support teens to quit smoking. The developers of the SmokeFree.gov site and the women-specific sub-site at http://women.smokefree.gov have now developed a youth-specific site: http://teen.smokefree.gov.
SAPCA Awarded Certificate for Work on Underage Drinking LawsThe Arlington Ready Coalition presented SAPCA with a certificate of appreciation, on behalf of the Community Coalitions of Virginia, to recognize SAPCA's achievements toward improving underage drinking laws in the state of Virginia. Based on SAPCA's recommendations, Delegate Charniele Herring sponsored a bill, strengthening the language in the Code of Virginia relating to providing alcohol to minors. The new wording made the "Social Host" law more enforceable in Virginia. It holds adults accountable for willfully contributing to the provision of alcohol to all underage consumers.
