Smoke Free Alexandria

No Smoking In This AreaThere is no fundamental right to smoke under either federal or Virginia Law. Further, an overwhelming number of studies show that exposure to tobacco smoke causes lung cancer and cardiac disease in nonsmokers. This means that landlords, tenants and condo owners should fully explore their rights to restrict smoking in their units.

Why are smoke-free policies a good idea for your apartment building or condo?

The 2006 Surgeon General’s report on involuntary smoking concluded that there is no safe level of exposure. Even brief exposures to tobacco smoke can have negative implications for those who do not smoke: “A smoke-free environment is the only way to fully protect nonsmokers from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate exposure of nonsmokers to secondhand smoke.”

Over the last few years, many private landlords have made the housing units they own smoke-free because of consumer demand, health concerns, reduced fire hazard, lower insurance costs, and decreased cleaning costs. Learn your rights and responsibilities regarding smoke-free apartments and condos:
